War horses, war steeds or war horses served Chinese warriors in their battles from very early on. These horses were trained not to be impressed by the hustle and bustle of battle, but to attack their opponents with kicks and bites. Thus, these animals inevitably had to be very strong horses, as they had to carry a warrior in full equipment including weapons.
This sculpture shows a warhorse from the Tang Dynasty (617-907).
In Chinese culture, the horse played such an important role that even a sign of the zodiac was dedicated to it. The horse occupies the seventh position in the Chinese zodiac, after the snake and before the goat. The Chinese Year of the Horse repeats itself in a 12-year cycle. The next "Year of the Horse" will begin on 17 February 2026 and end on 5 February 2027. It will be the Year of the Fire Horse.
The design of this sculpture is attributed to the sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye, but is not considered certain.
Made of bronze with a brown patina, this sculpture was cast in lost wax, by hand, and mounted on a black marble base.
This bronze is perfect for any horse lover or collector. An exceptional gift for a birthday, anniversary or even a wedding.
